In a way, fads function like mini-religions: they offer belief, ritual, belonging, and identity. People are drawn to them because they hold out hope of quick improvement and a sense of control, because they create shared practices that make us feel part of something bigger, and because they let us signal a special identity or distinction from the ordinary. The difference is that most fads are short-lived, since the promised results rarely match reality, while religions endure because they touch deeper existential questions about meaning, suffering, and the human condition.
